$1.2 billion US wastewater contract win for SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT

SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT has concluded a 20-year agreement with Nassau County in the United States to provide management and operations of its wastewater systems for US$1.2 billion.

United Water, a SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT subsidiary, will operate, manage and maintain Nassau County's (state of New York) wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations and sewers.

The agreement marks a new stage in the Group's international strategy, which has significantly reinforced in North America following the award of the waste management contract for Edmonton in Canada (C$120 million – 5 years ), and of the management contract for the largest wastewater recycling plant  in the United States in California (US$50 million – 5 years).

The Nassau County sanitation network covers 1.2 million customers on Long Island. Once it has been treated, the wastewater is treated for disposal into estuaries that are close to beaches and bays that are very popular with local residents.

The local authority will invest over US$830 million in the system in the coming years. The project will specifically enable the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy -which devastated a large part of the coast in 2012 - to be repaired, and the existing facilities to be reinforced.

According to SUEZ, the deal means the local authority will be able to save US$230 million, thanks to an improved operational efficiency and in particular to the reduction in energy consumption and chemicals, a decrease in sludge generation and production costs, but also an improved productivity of the plant.

SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT said an increased use of cutting-edge technologies will also help to optimize the management ofNassau County’s operations and in an industry first, United Water will display the operational data and live video feeds from facilities and outflow pipes on its website.
