The Dutch firm Tidal Bridge BV, a partnership between constructor Strukton International, international engineering and environmental consulting firm Antea Group and private equity firm Dutch Expansion Capital, has started the feasibility study for the Palmerah Tidal Bridge project in Indonesia.
The Palmerah Tidal Bridge project has National Strategic Project status - the project includes the construction of a floating bridge together with the world’s largest tidal power plant.
The first scope of the plan consists of the construction of the 800 meter Palmerah Bridge at Larantuka Strait, East Flores, and a tidal energy power plant with an installed capacity of 18 MW to 23 MW, providing energy for more than 100.000 people.
Following on from the first phase, the project may be followed by an extension and finalisation of the power plants to an installed capacity of 90 MW to 115 MW for more than half a million people.
The bridge and tidal power plant will contribute to the development of the Eastern part of Indonesia and the connection between the islands by improving its infrastructure. The combination of the bridge with the tidal energy power plant makes the project unique in its kind. The planned location, Larantuka Strait, is highly suitable for the generation of tidal energy due to the water flows.
Eric van den Eijnden, CEO Tidal Bridge commented:
“We are proud to contribute to this bridge with cutting-edge technology and the largest tidal power plant in the world and in so doing be able to increase the living standard of the people.”
The start of the feasibility study follows the signing of the Head of Agreement in The Hague by Tidal Bridge BV and Indonesian Ministry in April 2016 which defines a roadmap for the joint development of the Palmerah Bridge in the Larantuka strait.
It is the first project as part of the Dutch - Indonesian cooperation in the area of water works. The project is endorsed by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure & Environment, the Dutch Embassy in Jakarta, the Indonesian province NTT, the Ministry of Energy, Public Works & Marine, and the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague.
The bridge and integrated power plant will be installed at the end of 2018 while the extension of the power plant up to 80 MW will be realized in 2020.
The Tidal Bridge partnership was founded in 2015 - all three partners already have experience in the realization of tidal projects.
