Canals and Rivers Trust seek abstraction licence for West Yorks hydro power

The Canals and Rivers Trust has applied to the Environment Agency for a full licence to abstract water for hydro-electric power generation from the River Calder in West Yorkshire.

The Canal and Rivers Trust is seeking to abstract water at the following rates and periods:

  • 79,344 cubic metres an hour
  • 1,904,256 cubic metres a day
  • 570,000,000 cubic metres a year

An application is also being made for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Calder – with the objective of impounding water by means of the works to protect navigation levels and provide a consistent water level for monitoring of abstraction and amenity flow calculations.

The proposed quantities are to be taken only after environmental flows including fish passage are accounted for and all abstracted water will be returned to the river near the foot of the weir. The impoundment licence is to repair the existing weir boards and increase their height by 0.1 metre to account for subsidence over the lifetime of the weir. A transfer licence has also been requested at the site to allow for bywash and fish pass flows.

A copy of the applications, maps, plans and any other document submitted with it may be inspected free of charge at the Environment Agency office in Leeds.

All comments on the application must be sent in writing to Permitting and Support Centre, Water Resources Team , Quadrant 2, 99 Parkway Avenue , Sheffield S9 4WF or by email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Deadline for comments is 28 August 2014.
