Wainstones Energy Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a full licence to abstract water from the River Mersey at Carrington to support a proposed power station at Carrington, Trafford.
The application is to abstract water between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year as follows:
- 1,988 cubic metres an hour
- 47,711 cubic metres a day
- 12,455,212 cubic metres a year
The water will be used for evaporative cooling and demineralisation for the production of energy - 30% of the abstracted water will be discharged back into the River Mersey immediately downstream of the abstraction point.
The application is to support the proposed Trafford Power combined cycle gas turbine generating station at Carrington, Trafford.
Wainstones Energy has received authorisation for the construction of an electricity generating station with the capacity to generate 1520MW – the firm has also made a further application Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change to increase the generating capacity to 2060MW.
