Industry leaders gather for major flooding conference

Industry leaders from across the UK’s flood defence community will be gathering in London next week for a special one-day event, hosted by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

With annual flood damage costs expected to rise to £27 billion by 2080 ICE says it is vital that government agencies and engineers develop their understanding of flood risk management and building in resilience into local infrastructure networks.

The ICE Flooding 2015 conference on 13 May will bring together industry leaders to discuss the increasingly costly problem.  Chaired by ICE president Professor David Balmforth and former ICE president Dr Jean Venables CBE, representatives from the Environment Agency, UK water and sewerage companies, and local and central governments, will share insights on the future of UK flood defences, and how best to adapt infrastructure, homes and businesses to an increasingly volatile climate.

They will also scrutinise Government’s current position and commitment to funding for flood risk management, and encourage delegates to challenge how and where to implement flood risk management schemes.

ICE has repeatedly called on all political parties for a sustained commitment to investment in infrastructure. This includes ICE’s Manifesto for Infrastructure call for the next government to commit to a long term maintenance investment programme for flood defences, which complements the current 6 year capital pledge.

The ICE Flooding 2015 Conference takes place on 13 May 2015 at the Royal Garden Hotel, London. Click here for further information on the programme, speakers and registration.
