Work starts on £1.2M Braunton flood defence scheme

The Environment Agency is starting work this week on the £1.2 million flood defence improvement scheme at Braunton in Devon to reduce the risk of flooding in the village.

Following the floods in the village in 2004, the Environment Agency created a flood defence plan, working in liaison with the parish council.

The new work will last six months and is scheduled to finish at the end of April 2012.

The scheme, which will cost £1.2 million, has been designed by Halcrow working in conjunction with the Agency. A quarter of the funding has come from the South West Regional Flood Defence Committee's local levy and the rest from a grant-in-aid settlement.

The new works will reduce the risk of flooding from the river from around a 1 in 20 chance in any one year to a 1 in 100 chance of occurring.

The scheme includes a flood relief culvert, flood walls will be built and using an existing wall to create a low defence barrier upstream of the bridge.

The works are being carried out by Team Van Oord.
