House of Commons EFRA Committee recalls CEO and Chair of South East Water for further questioning

The House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Committee has recalled the CEO and Chair of South East Water for further questioning about recent water supply outtages which affected thousands of the company's customers.

HOUSE OF COMMONS COMMITTEE ROOM

The Committee is holding an evidence session on Tuesday 14 April when MPs will question the Chair, Chief Executive and a non-executive director of South East Water (SEW). Appearing in a second panel will be witnesses from the Drinking Water Inspectorate, the Consumer Council for Water and Ofwat. The cross-party Committee will be seeking clarity on the company’s version of events surrounding the two-week outage of drinking water that hit Tunbridge Wells in November.

The incident was caused by a failure at the firm’s Pembury Treatment Works, which led to contaminated water coming through taps. There will also be questions about the major outage that affected thousands of homes and premises across Kent and Sussex in January.

During the Committee’s previous session with South East Water in January, the Drinking Water Inspectorate accused the company of giving incomplete evidence to MPs on the reasons for the failure at Pembury. The session will follow SEW completing its own internal investigation into what transpired.
