The Welsh Assembly has launched a new consultation on its Review of Shellfish Water Designations in Wales.
The Welsh Assembly is carrying out a review of areas designated as shellfish waters under the Shellfish Waters Directive (2006/113/EC), which requires Member States to identify (designate) all Shellfish waters
The Directive covers the quality of shellfish waters and to coastal and brackish waters (estuaries) which need protection or improvement to support shellfish life and growth.
The Assembly has examined the existing 26 designated Shellfish Waters in Wales and proposes to keep designations for areas that are currently actively harvested or have been in the last three years. For areas which have been inactive in the last three years and are unlikely to become active in the near future, it is proposing to de-designate these areas.
It also proposes to designate three new shellfish water areas which are currently active as harvest areas but are not currently designated as shellfish waters under the Directive.
The proposals also include amendments to a number of existing designated waters to better reflect the shellfish harvesting areas.
The Assembly is now seeking comment from stakeholders affected by the changes – including views on whether any further waters should be designated.
Deadline for submission of responses is 2nd March 2012.
