The European Commission has launched a new flagship initiative aimed at improving resource efficiency across the European Union.

Today WaterBriefing is  publishing an Executive Briefing on what has been described as the "biggest change in responsibility for sewerage services since 1937" – the forthcoming transfer of responsibility for private sewers and lateral drains to water and sewerage companies.

Farms fined for slurry pollution

Two farms have been fined thousands of pounds this week for two separate slurry pollution incidents.

The cross-party Environment, Food and Rural Afairs Committee has published the Report of its inquiry into Future Flood and Water Management.

Water industry regulator Ofwat has hailed its approach to the 2009 price review, which set the water companies’ investment programme for the next five years, as “ a considerable success.”

Water UK, the body that represents all UK water and wastewater service suppliers at national and European level, has published its response to Defra’s consultation on developing an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Framework.

Ofwat looks set to reduce the level of its reporting requirements from water and wastewater companies in England and Wales.

Northern Ireland (NI) has introduced new Regulations under the Water Framework Directive to control oil storage.

Bob Tallentire, M.D. at Adien, WaterBriefing’s Expert Focus on Detection and Mapping, comments on the uncertainty surrounding the extent of the UK’s private sewer network.

Water industry regulator Ofwat has said that an increase in bills for customers is inevitable following the transfer of private sewers to water and sewerage companies in England and Wales.

Big fines for water polluters

The courts isued big fines last week to two companies responsible for major water pollution offences. In one case an oil spill cost the firm concerned over £17,500.

On Thursday 17 November 2010 Mark Group Limited of Leicester pleaded guilty at Worcester Magistrates Court to polluting the Barbourne Brook at Gheluvelt Park, Worcester.
