NI bathing water quality improves

The results from the annual monitoring programme of local bathing water quality have shown that the quality of bathing water in Northern Ireland has improved, with 16 out of 24 areas meeting guideline standards.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is engaging with land managers to discuss the issues associated with water abstraction for irrigation.
Ofwat, the economic regulator of the water and sewerage sector, has reported that although the water companies continue to deliver good levels of service to most consumers, last year six companies failed to meet their leakage targets.

Farmer’s crops ruined by sewage

Anglian Water has been fined a total of £22,000 and ordered to pay full costs of £4,489 after a rising main burst twice in seven months ruining crops both times.
A record number of beaches and inland bathing waters in England and Wales reached the highest EC standards in bathing water quality this year, a report published today by the Environment Agency reveals.
St Regis Paper Co Ltd, the UK's largest waste paper recycling company, has been convicted of misleading the Environment Agency over the quality of effluent discharged from its papermill into a Devon river.

For more than three hours an Anglian Water sewage treatment works discharged sewage into the River Wid in Essex killing hundreds of fish and hundreds of invertebrates, a court heard last Friday.

Scottish reservoir safety rules to be updated

Communities throughout Scotland could soon be better protected against the threat of flooding from reservoirs if plans presented to Parliament today are given the green light.

A Berkshire property company has been ordered to pay more than £20,500 for breaching its consent to discharge treated sewage into a Thatcham stream.

A Surrey transport company has been ordered to pay a total of £6,867 after pleading guilty to polluting a stretch of the River Thames with oil.

The Chartered Institution for Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) is calling for the Government to develop a “shadow price” for water to ensure that the sustainable management of water fully reflects the value of water, not just for comsumers but also for the environment and the ecosystem services it provides.
