Text and data mining (TDM) has huge potential research and innovation, but the current European regulatory framework means that EU uptake remains low - the European Union’s FutureTDM project will first identify the barriers, and then seek to dismantle them.
The growth of big data has been accompanied by new, powerful techniques to harness information from it. Text and data mining (TDM) – the process of deriving high-quality information from digital material – enables researchers to tap into and build upon a wealth of knowledge.
Despite the potential, the application of TDM in Europe remains lower than in the USA and Asia. This is due to the European regulatory framework. Identifying and removing the barriers are the main objectives of the EU-funded FutureTDM project, which is eventually intended to enhance the uptake of TDM in European research.
Starting with a bottom-up approach, the project will first initiate dialogue and engagement among all relevant stakeholders. The resulting consultation will identify practices, requirements and challenges relating to the uptake of TDM. The issues will also be discussed by key stakeholders in knowledge cafés and workshops, and presented through an Advisory Board.
The project will combine the outcomes of the consultation with an assessment of existing studies, legal regulations and policies on TDM across the EU and its Member States. This will be complemented by an analysis of the trends identified in current applications of TDM, including relevant research projects, key statistics and best practices.
The outcomes will feed into the development of novel legal and policy frameworks and interdisciplinary guidelines for practitioners.
FutureTDM will also create a web-based platform with intuitive tools for would-be TDM users, such as a TDM stakeholder roadmap, a European TDM research project directory and a best practices library.
EU countries involved in the € 1. 49m project are the UK, Netherlands, Greece and Poland, with Austria as the Coordinator.
