The Environment Agency has extended the consultation for the permit applications to produce natural gas from shale by UK company Cuadrilla for two sites in Lancashire by a further four weeks.
The Environment Agency said the request for additional time is appropriate to allow local interested groups to respond to proposals for the Roseacre Wood and Preston New Road sites.
These are the first permit applications which include activities relating to high volume hydraulic fracturing for shale gas.
Steve Molyneux, Environment Manager for Lancashire, commented:
“Our regulatory controls for onshore oil and gas are in place to protect people and the environment. We always take the views of the local community seriously and believe an extension is appropriate.”
The consultation period for Cuadrilla’s Preston New Road site will run until 5 August and the consultation for its Roseacre Wood site until 19 August. The Agency said it welcomed comments from the public and interested groups on local environmental factors that may be important.
To date the Agency has received a total of 8 comments on the Preston New Road Exploration Site and 2 comments on the Roseacre Wood Exploration Site.
Cuadrilla’s chief executive Francis Egan said:
“The planning application for Roseacre Wood – together with the Preston New Road application – are important milestones for Lancashire and the UK as we seek to unlock Lancashire’s considerable shale gas potential in a safe and sensible way. We’ve been working hard to incorporate, as far as reasonably practical, the feedback received and the applications include the changes we have made to our proposals as a result of the views expressed during our consultation with local residents, community groups and stakeholders. The end result is probably the two most comprehensive Environmental Statements ever completed for proposed shale gas exploration sites.”
Based in Staffordshire, the UK gas and oil exploration and production company was formed in 2007 and is privately owned.
