MMO opens sustainable development consultation for South marine planning

The Marine Management Organisation has launched a new sustainable development consultation for the South Inshore and South Offshore Marine Plans.

Open for five weeks, the survey is the first of a five part Sustainability Appraisal process.  The process should independently assess the South marine plans, and understand how they will help deliver sustainable development.

  •  The key aims of the plans are as follows:
  • Achieving a sustainable marine economy;
  • Ensuring a strong, healthy and just society;
  • Living within environmental limits;
  • Promoting good governance; and
  • Using sound science responsibly.

The appraisal is extensive,covering the impacts and improvements marine planning could have on a variety of issues. The report references a large number of nationwide and localised targets plans and procedures already in place, and identifies the key issues o be considered in each section - including the effects that development in coastal areas (such as offshore energy projects, pipelines, dredging and fishing) may have on coastal communities.

Effects on wildlife, geology, geomorphology and coastal processes, the landscape and seascape, and the water environment are also considered in the report. These are explained comprehensively, with maps showing proposed and designated protected areas, shipping activity, in-use and potential areas of renewable and non-renewable energy, and current levels of wealth and economic growth along the south coast, to name just a few.

Members of the MMO’s SA advisory group, including the RSPB and Wildlife Trusts, statutory nature conservation bodies, industry representatives, Wildlife Trusts and Defra, have also contributed to the report.

MMO’s Sustainability Manager, Chris Maxwell, said:

“This is a really important first step in understanding how marine planning in the South will help deliver sustainable development. I hope a wide range of marine users will get involved in helping us set out how our sustainable goals can be measured and achieved.”

The consultation is now live, and closes on Friday 2nd January 2015. Click here to acces the consultation online.
