The 4th Arab Water Forum under the theme of Sharing Water … Sharing Destiny, is taking place this week in Cairo, Egypt under the auspices of the League of Arab States (LAS) and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Egypt.
Convened by the Arab Water Council (AWC), the fourth series of the tri-annual Arab water Fora (AWF) provides a regional platform for engaging AWC members, decision-makers, water resources experts, practitioners and institutions in dialogue on all aspects of water management for growth and sustainable development in the Arab Region.
The main goal of the AWF is to engage all water-interested parties and stakeholders in a dialogue about the extent to which current water policies and actions are succeeding in strengthening water security in the region, together with effectively contributing to food security and ecosystem conservation.
The 4th Arab Water Forum addresses five main themes aimed at enhancing sharing processes within the water sector:
- Water and sustainable development
- Water, food andenergy-climate nexus
- Water quality and ecosystems
- Sustainable solutions for shared water resources
- Water and science, technology and innovation
According to the AWF, conflicts about shared water resources in the Arab region are still searching for solutions, commenting:
“When about 60% of fresh water resources come from outside the national borders, countries in the Arab region have no more time to wait for fair and sustainable solutions.”
“Mutual understanding and cooperation between riparian states play a vital role in finding and embarking on convenient and acceptable arrangements for sharing water equitably and maximizing their mutual benefits in the basin.”
The need for increased water security in the Arab region is driving countries towards using non-conventional water resources which involve important quality issues.
High Level Panels are taking place during the Forum with the aim of synthesising the viewpoints of political Arab leaders and investment institutions on water-related issues, as well as stimulating political will towards taking actions on regional water challenges. Arab politicians, financing establishments and country representatives are taking part in the interactive sessions.
The third Arab Water Expo is taking place alongside the Forum.
