Poole Harbour Commissioners has reported that work is underway to tackle a major pollution incident at Owers Bay in Poole Harbour yesterday resulting from a leak from a pipeline operated by Perenco.
Poole Harbour is one of the world’s largest natural harbours and an internationally important area for nature conservation - most of the foreshore is designated a SPA (Special Protection Area) under the European Habitats Directive.
PHC said in its latest update that oil producer Perenco had reported that a small amount of reservoir fluid - approximately 85% water and 15% oil – had escaped from the pipeline. The pipeline was shut down and booms place on either side of the leak in order to minimise any pollution. Perenco advised PHC that there was no risk of any further leakage and that early indications suggested that the surface slick was already dispersing.
PHC activated its emergency oil spill plan yesterday - specialist oil spill response companies are assisting with the operation.
Yesterday a major incident was declared and agencies including Dorset Police, Dorset Council, Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council, NHS, Environment Agency and Natural England are also involved.
A further assessment is being made this morning with regard to the clean up operation. AS a precaution PHC is advising the public to avoid using the water for recreational purposes and avoid using beaches with Poole Harbour until further intelligence is available.
