New £1.6 million government-backed fund to drive water-saving across Cambridgeshire

A new £1.6 million, fully government-funded initiative is set to support businesses and organisations across Cambridgeshire to reduce water use through practical upgrades and innovative efficiency solutions.

WATER EFFICIENCY CAMBRIDGESHIRE 1.6M FUND

The Water Efficiency Cambridgeshire Fund (the weCB Fund), sponsored by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) in partnership with MOSL, will provide grants ranging from £500 to £100,000 for non-household water-saving projects across the Cambridge Water Resource Zone.

Applications for the fund will open from 13 April to 1 May 2026, with a simple online application process designed to support a range of applicants - from local businesses to water sector specialists and innovators.

A boost for one of the UK’s most water-stressed regions

Cambridgeshire is one of the most water scarce regions in the UK, making water efficiency a growing priority for both the environment and the economy.

Sarah McMath, CEO of MOSL, said:

“The weCB Fund will support ideas that reduce demand, minimise pressure on local water sources and help organisations lower operating costs. It combines national funding with local delivery, positioning Cambridgeshire as a key location for tackling water scarcity through innovation and collaboration.

“Whether you are a business, a charity, a public sector organisation, or a delivery partner with a solution that can make a real difference, the fund is available to you.”

Eligible projects could include water audits, upgrades to water-saving technologies, and programmes that improve how water is used and managed in non-household settings.

The fund is open to:

  • Businesses and organisations within the Cambridge Water Resource Zone
  • Water retailers and wholesalers
  • Water efficiency specialists and auditors
  • Innovators and solution providers

Launch event to support applicants

Prospective applicants are invited to attend the official launch event on Tuesday 14 April 2026, where they can learn more about the fund and how to apply.

The event will be held in person at Storey’s Field Centre, Eddington Avenue, Cambridge (CB3 1AA) and online.
