Ofwat and utilities to speak on key issues at Smart Water conference

Keynote speakers including Ofwat, Thames Water, Wessex, South Staffs Water and Scottish Water will shortly discuss a range of key issues surrounding the uptake and implementation of smart water technologies at this month’s upcoming Smart Water Systems conference in London.

An exclusive update from The Water Services Regulation Authority, OFWAT, will be just one of the event highlights for 2015. The presentation by OFWAT's Director of Strategy & Policy, Andrew Beaver, will address major UK challenges, the possibility of cost reflecting tariffs and provide attendees with a unique insight on future regulatory changes.

Understanding the customers’ behaviour, viewpoint and experience will also be a major focus, together with insight and analysis from a selection of international water utility companies currently implementing smart meters – including presentations from Thames Water, Jersey Water and Scottish Water.

Darren Bentham, formerly of Southern Water and the leader of the first, large scale compulsory water metering programme in the UK, will examine the business case in the UK, including:

  • How realistic is smart water in the UK
  • Ways in which barriers may be overcome
  • Opportunities to watch out for in the future

Martin Hall, Metering Technology Manager, Thames Water will describe the lessons learnt from Thames’ own trial and rolling out smart water meters across the Thames area. An interesting presentation from Matt Wheeldon, Head of Wastewater Strategy at Wessex Water will look at issues surrounding the existing state of play on wastewater metering.

Currently measurement of wastewater flow lags way, way behind water supply. Wastewater remains a critical utility service to protect public health, but one where charging is not at all reflective of quantity of the service used. New technology now available is opening up the ability to measure accurately, economically and reliably. While wastewater metering is still in its infancy, it offers the opportunity to transform the market to the benefit of both customers and service providers.

The Smart Water Systems conference is aimed at strengthening knowledge of smart water meter data handling issues as well as looking at the practicalities of interactive billing.
