Gowerton gets good return from Jacopa

Wastewater solutions and services experts Jacopa are celebrating the successful completion of a key project to install two of its robust, cost-effective half-bridge scrapers at an environmentally critical Welsh Water wastewater treatment works.

Gowerton4The 77,000 PE Gowerton treatment works takes wastewater from a 60km2 catchment in the picturesque North Gower area of South Wales, and discharges highly treated effluent into the Loughor estuary. The estuary is a designated Special Protection Area, a Special Area of Conservation and a RAMSAR site.

The contract also involved providing tripod assemblies, a riser pipe and bell mouths for the works’ new 29.6m diameter final settlement tanks. The scrapers perform the important task of removing return activated sludge from the settlement tanks for further treatment. The construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall commissioned the company to provide the equipment.

The substantial 16.3m bridges were assembled in house to allow tight monitoring of both costs and time. The size of the bridges meant that access to the busy treatment works site and the positioning of the units in the tanks had to be carefully planned, and required excellent communications with the client to ensure the works did not affect other site activities.

The timing of the installation was also meticulously organised to precisely match with relevant site activities and the client’s state of readiness. Equipment was carefully prepared ready for the optimum installation window, which again required precise planning and clear communication.

Ultimately, large cranes successfully lifted the bridges into position and the settlement tanks are now operational. The Jacopa project team commented:

“We thoroughly enjoyed being involved with the project and being able to resolve the day-to-day challenges. As always, our aim is to build an excellent relationship with our clients, so that they are fully aware of why we are approaching a task in a particular way. We work hard to ensure the best possible solutions, and are very pleased that on this project our approach was a great success.”
