CSO Success for Jacopa

Jacopa has provided one of its robust CS7002 Copa raked bar screens for a challenging combined sewer overflow (CSO) project in Tonbridge, Kent.

The original overflow screen was beyond repair, and so had been removed. Access to the sewer was from the road itself and was very restrictive in terms of the equipment that could be installed in such a confined space.

Halow Road 2 1Local water service company Southern Water’s MEICA support, Barhale Trant Utilities (BTU), contacted Jacopa for its expert input – the company has extensive knowledge, experience and a portfolio of such storm equipment.

Jacopa’s Technical Sales Manager and storm product expert, Tony Simister, attended the site to assess the most cost-effective and robust solution. Jacopa provided a design focused around their CS7002 Copa 4mm raked bar screen that was accepted by Southern Water as the most suitable solution.

The screen is ideally suited to both new and existing CSO chambers where high frequency spills are anticipated. The modular design is perfect for retrofitting, as little or no civil work is required to the existing chamber. The design allows the unit to be assembled below ground through a manhole just 600mm in diameter. Each unit can cater for flow rates from 50 to 3000 litres/sec, and multiple units can be used to increase flow capacity.

The stainless steel unit, with its simple frame structure and rake mechanism, was installed in one piece with a new hydraulic power pack and control panel. The unit will ensure all storm overflows are continually screened and the screen itself will be kept clear, providing a free flow at all times during a storm.

Tony Simister said:

“Jacopa was able to provide added client value by building the unit offsite, ensuring minimal time was required on site to drive down the impact on the neighbourhood. The screen requires minimal maintenance, reduces operator requirements and will prevent the possibility of unscreened discharges in future.”
