Northumbrian Water’s £66 million mains cleaning programme to protect tap water quality is continuing to move through Newcastle city centre in January.
The next phase of the essential cleaning work, which is being carried out by Northumbrian Water’s contractor Seymour Civil Engineering, starts this week and is expected to take up to four weeks to complete.
Since February 2012, Northumbrian Water has cleaned 137 kilometres of large diameter water mains in the lower Tyne Valley, Newcastle and Gateshead. During 2015, the cleaning programme will continue and move towards the eastern end of Newcastle with works planned in Byker, Walker and Wallsend.
Pressure jetting technology will be used to clean the water pipe, a method of cleaning involves using a self-propelling ‘pig’ which uses water jets to propel it along and clean sections of pipe at the same time. The technology allows longer sections of pipe to be cleaned with a minimal number of access pits.
