Northern Ireland Water is starting work on two new upgrade schemes - part of further wastewater infrastructure improvements, together with its ongoing water mains improvement scheme throughout Northern Ireland
The water company will shortly commence essential water mains improvement work involving the installation of 1600 metres of new water main to replace the existing main in Annaclone as part of an overall £2,600,000 investment in the wider Lisburn, Dromore, Banbridge and Newry areas.
NI Water’s contractor Lagan Construction Group is carrying out the work on the latest scheme in the utility’s Water Mains Rehabilitation Project.
NI Water is also progressing further wastewater infrastructure improvements with a programme of pipelaying as part of a £1.5m investment in Ballymartin, Co Down.
The latest phase of work, which got underway this week, involves the laying of around 1800m of new pumping main between the recently constructed pumping station in Ballymartin and another new pumping station which is due to be built adjacent to the Valley Road junction at Blackrock.
Speaking about the programme of work and the benefits the investment will bring, Dermott McCurdy, head of wastewater capital procurement said:
“This pumping main and the pumping station planned for Blackrock will build on the extensive work already carried out in Ballymartin to provide the area with a modern wastewater network. The overall scheme will collect wastewater from the Blackrock and Ballymartin areas and transfer it to Kilkeel for treatment. The new infrastructure will bring about environmental benefits in the area, including removing untreated sewage discharges from the existing sea outfalls, and will accommodate future development in the village for the next 20 years.”
