Complaints and compensation high on agenda at water watchdog meeting

Progress made towards compensating all customers affected by a boil water notice in Lancashire during the summer will be discussed when the water watchdog’s Northern Committee meets tomorrow.

Senior representatives from water companies who serve customers in the north of England will attend the Consumer Council for Water’s (CCWater) regional meeting in public at The Queens Hotel in Leeds.

The agenda will include an update from United Utilities on its compensation pay-out to more than 300,000 customers in Lancashire, who were advised to boil their tap water for several weeks after traces of cryptosporidium were found in supplies.

Members of the public will also be able to hear how the region’s water companies compare within the industry on customer service and complaint handling.

Robert Light, who will take charge of his first committee meeting since being appointed CCWater’s Northern Committee Chair, said:

“Water companies in northern England compare favourably to the rest of the country when it comes to reducing complaints.”

“That’s good news for homes and businesses in our region but there’s no room for complacency, which is why we want to see companies get more things right first time.”

United Utilities, Yorkshire Water, Northumbrian Water and Hartlepool Water will all be represented at the meeting which starts at 10.15am.

There will also be an opportunity for consumers to raise any issues or questions they may have about water and sewerage services at the start of the meeting.
