Northern Ireland Water (NIW) was fined £15,000 plus £37 court costs at Antrim Magistrates’ Court on Monday 7 June 2010 for discharging poisonous and noxious substances into a County Antrim waterway.
On 23 October 2008, a Water Quality Inspector (WQI), acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency inspected a waterway at Cidercourt Road, Crumlin and found it to be heavily discoloured.
The source was traced to Laurelvale Sewage Pumping Station (SPS), Crumlin which was discharging to an unnamed tributary of the Crumlin River.
NIW said that the pumping station is scheduled for inspection every four weeks, however the high sump analogue alarm (which triggers alarms when levels rise to the point of overflow) did not appear to have been set prior to the date of the incident.
A sample taken confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious and polluting matter which would have been potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.
