Successful prosecution by Severn Trent Water

Jersey Colours Ltd has been fined nearly £10,000 for exceeding the colour limit in its trade effluent consent with Severn Trent Water. The company has also been ordered to pay legal costs of £6,723.45.

The case was heard on Wednesday 28th July, at Leicester Magistrates Court, following prosecution by Severn Trent Water for breaches of the Water Industry Act 1991.

On three separate occasions in September and October last year, Jersey Colours Ltd discharged more dye than agreed into the sewer network which passed through the sewerage system causing an impact on the sewage treatment works. Investigations by Severn Trent traced the discharge to Jersey Colours Ltd.

Simon Cocks, waste water services director for Severn Trent Water, commented:

“We manage the treatment process at our sewage works to cope with the agreed consent, so exceeding this consent is not only illegal; it can cause untold damage to the works. Rather than having to take action in court, we would prefer to work together to prevent any breaches occurring in the first place.

“In turn our customers pay for damage to the sewer network and the treatment works, so it is important that we prosecute offenders in appropriate cases and take action to recover costs where possible.”
