A pump failure at Irish Water’s Listowel Regional Water Treatment Plant on Sunday has led to significant disruption to the water supply to customers in surrounding areas until yesterday.
While Irish Water and Kerry County Council have been working to repair the broken pumps, alternative water supplies through the provision of water tankers had to be put in place to ensure customers will have access to a water supply.
One of the failed pumps had to be rebuilt by EPS Group who are pumping specialists based in Mallow, incorporating a number of spare parts sourced and modified to suit the pump unit. Engineers worked late into the night to carry out the complex repair.
In the meantime emergency water supplies were provided in the affected areas with the help of the Civil Defence who distributed bottled water to vulnerable customers, manned water stations and assisted with the distribution of information leaflets to homes and businesses. Irish Water also encouraged farmers to reactivate their own wells where possible to conserve water.
Following the successful completion of repairs to the pump yesterday, reservoirs are now refilling and water is gradually returning to homes and businesses in the surrounding areas.
Senior officials from Irish Water and Kerry County Council are continuing to monitor the situation closely as water supply returns to homes and businesses. Irish Water said:
“Work will continue on implementing a back-up pumping system so that we have the necessary resilience in place for securing the supply. We will be implementing a full replacement of these pumps as part of an upgrade programme and the timing of this replacement is being reviewed by Irish Water following this incident.”
Irish Water and Kerry County Council kept customers informed via a variety of social media channels during the incident.
