Irish Water starts work on Lough Forbes Water Treatment Plant upgrade

Irish Water, working in partnership with Longford County Council, is starting work as part of an upgrade to the water treatment plant at Lough Forbes.

The water company is upgrading the water treatment plant at Lough Forbes, Co. Longford. The project will benefit over 19,000 customers in Longford supplied by the Longford Central Water Supply Scheme and ensure the continued delivery of a clean, safe drinking water source and increase treatment capacity to allow for future growth in the area.

The works are being carried out by Veolia Water Ireland on behalf of Irish Water and will ensure that the water treatment facilities are fully compliant with EU Drinking Water Directives.

The upgrade works will provide increased capacity, optimise the treatment process and improve the performance of the water treatment plant to meet the current needs of the area and allow for social and economic growth in Longford.

The works are being carried out by Veolia Water Ireland on behalf of Irish Water and being delivered under the Early Contractor Involvement Programme.

As part of the project works, which are scheduled for completion in Q1 2022, Irish Water will:

  • Construct a new clarification (DAF) tank
  • Upgrade the existing sand filters
  • Upgrade the chemical dosing infrastructure
  • Construct a new treated water tank and pumping station
  • Upgrade the monitoring and instrumentation systems
  • Upgrade the control, telemetry and automation processes
  • Upgrade the used wash-water and sludge treatment process

Speaking about the project, Martin Temple, Irish Water Regional Lead, said:

“This essential upgrade will improve drinking water quality and safeguard water supply for over 19,000 people in Longford. The works will be contained onsite so there will be minimum disruption to local businesses and residents. This project forms part of a larger investment by Irish Water in water treatment plants across Longford, including similar upgrade works at Smear and Lough Kinale Water Treatment Plants.”
