Southern Water has notified water sector regulators, including Defra, Environment Agency, Natural England and Ofwat - of two separate incidents in the past few days.
Yesterday the water company said it was responding to a number of reports of flooding affecting customers in the Gosport area following exceptionally heavy rainfall earlier today.
The utility has visited customers to assess their situation and said it was continuing to speak with those who had been affected. Southern Water has also sent additional teams to the area to minimise the impact of the flooding on customers. A customer support team has also been in the area again from 7am this morning to provide further assistance to customers.
Defra and Ofwat have been notified of the incident.
In an unrelated incident on Saturday, a system fault at the company’s Brook Road Swalecliffe Wastewater Pumping Station resulted in wastewater leaving the Brook Pumping station and entering a nearby brook. Specialist teams sent to the site identified the failure and a fix was carried out, with the station running as normal the same day.
Following the electrical fault at the wastewater treatment works pumping station, Southern Water said it had undertaken regular monitoring and sampling of the entire water course from the pumping station all the way to the sea. The latest samples from the brook confirmed the water quality was normal. The utility is continuing to maintain extra specialist resources at the site.
Southern Water said it had notified the Environment Agency, Natural England and the Local Authority and would continue to work with them and stakeholders in the coming days to assess and mitigate against any impact to the environment. Ofwat and Defra have also been informed of the incident.
The company commented:
“Southern Water is committed to protecting the environment and part of this is being fully transparent about how we operate. No pollution is acceptable to us and we believe it is important that our customers are always fully informed. We will continue to strive to do better.”
