High blue green algae levels see Bristol Water suspend all activities at Chew Valley lake

Due to high Blue green algae levels in Chew Valley lake, Bristol Water has announced it has taken the difficult decision to suspend all activities that come into contact with the water on Chew Valley Lake.

BRISTOL WATER Chew-Valley-Lake-2

The notice, which covers a range of activities including bank angling, boat angling and sailing will remain in place until further notice. Warning signs have also been put in place at the reservoir.

Blue-green algae is naturally-occurring in places like reservoirs but it can be harmful to animals and humans. The water company is asking people to stay away from the reservoir area until the bloom clears.

Bristol Water said it will continue to take samples and look to lift the restriction as soon as practicably possible.

Associated risks to public health from contact with the water include skin irritation, respiratory issues, and sickness etc. - this may also be the case for pets (dogs) coming into contact with the water.

The utility will provide a further update once the algae levels drop to a safe level.
