Northumbrian Water completes £6.4m investment at Kelloe STW to protect County Durham water quality

Northumbrian Water has completed a £6.4 million investment in upgrades to Kelloe Sewage Treatment Works (STW), which will help to improve water quality in the Coxhoe Beck and watercourses downstream, including the River Wear.

The work on site, which has taken around 20 months and has been carried out by the company’s partners, Esh-Stantec and Retroflo, is part of its Water Industry National Environmental Programme.

Upgrades to Kelloe STW include new pumps and tanks, adding resilience to the site and the services it provides.

The investment is in addition to a further £13 million of upgrades to the company’s water network and sites in and around nearby Pittington and Sherburn, which are nearing completion.

Dean Thompson, Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, said:

“It’s fantastic to see the work at Kelloe complete, representing another significant investment in water quality the River Wear and across County Durham.”

David Pratt, Esh-Stantec Divisional Director, commented:

“As with all Esh-Stantec schemes, we have delivered a customer focussed approach alongside working within the local community to deliver a range of meaningful social value initiatives. This involved engaging with over 150 primary school children through our bespoke ‘Get into STEM Water’ session, sponsoring Kelloe Football Club and undertaking a voluntary litter pick.

“This was the first project awarded and delivered by Esh-Stantec via the Runway 3 framework and we’re pleased to bring it to a successful completion.”
