The RSPB is one of fifteen organisations supporting the plans to build a new super sewer to stop London's sewage running into the River Thames.
The NGO said that just 2 mm of rainfall in the Capital is enough to send raw sewage spilling into the river and that each year, tens of millions of tonnes of sewage pollutes the Thames, devastating wildlife. The RSPB has highlighted the ongoing pollution incident on the River Crane.
The RSPB says that London’s creaking sewage system is a large-scale problem which requires a large-scale solution for the capital for at least the next 120 years. The statement points out that despite the fact that each household will have to pay £60-65 extra a year from 2013 onwards for the £3.6 billion scheme, Thames Water bills are currently among the lowest in the country and the new higher rates will still be lower than those of some other UK water companies.
The RSPB is also highlighting the fact that construction of the tunnel will create 4,000 direct jobs and many more support roles.
With the UK government demanding a 50% reduction in storm overflow spills by 2029, the era of reactive management is over. Speaking in the House of Commons on 21 July 2025, then environment secretary Steve Reed said, “This Government will cut water companies’ sewage pollution in half by the end of the decade.”
