ADIA bought its 9.9% stake in Kemble Water, the owner of Thames Water, in December last year, while CIC bought an 8.7% holding in January.
The Sunday Times cited a number of anonymous sources in linking Mr. Blair’s consultancy, Tony Blair Associates (TBA) to the wealth funds, which are among the largest in the world.
The newspaper said that a spokesman for Mr. Blair had denied claims that he was being paid £1M+ a year to advise CIC on investment opportunities, or that he “had anything to do with”advising CIC on buying its stake in Kemble Water.
The Sunday Times quotes “an insider” as commenting:
“ I think it’s quite interesting that two sovereign wealth funds known well to Tony have made very similar buy-ups of Thames Water.”
In March it was reported that Australian investment group Macquarie was considering selling a further stake on behalf of the Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund.
