Olympics water supply project guided by new standards

Engineering group Atkins is currently delivering the UK’s biggest ever temporary water supply project in time for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games while using new standards for the first time.

The project, for which Atkins carried out the outline designs,  involves installing over 45km of temporary distribution pipework at 32 competition venues and 22 non-competition venues to provide a variety of water supply and waste removal services for a range of facilities including  toilets, catering and retail units, and drinking water fountains.

The Games temporary water supply will also be one of the first projects to use the new British Standards BS 8551 – Provision and management of temporary water supplies and distribution networks code of practice – as its guiding principle.

At a launch event for the new BS 8551 temporary water standard, Mike Newton, who is seconded from Atkins to LOCOG as waste and water manager, told the audience how the new standards had influenced the designs.

“Water will be supplied at the venues via two types of system. One takes a feed directly from the mains, the other requires water brought in via tankers,” he said. “Both meet the needs of the temporary water supply for the Games, but they have to be managed in different ways.”

“Existing legislation defines the legal requirements for the supply of water. The new standard – BS 8551 - provides useful guidance on how to achieve compliance with this legislation for temporary supply systems. This, for example, is particularly helpful on the management of tankered water supplies and disinfection requirements.”

Tom Digby-Rogers, programme manager for the sustainability portfolio at British Standards Institution (BSI), said:

“BSI is delighted that Atkins has adopted BSI’s pioneering new standard, BS 8551 in order to address potential issues in managing the suitability of temporary water systems during the Games. Previously there has been little to no guidance on best practice for supplying water to temporary events and BSI intends for this standard to fill that gap.”
