Yorkshire Water has completed a £745,000 scheme aimed at protecting residents in Wyke from the risk of flooding.
The company has now completed the installation of a storage pipe, 187 metres in length and 2.4 metres in diameter in the field at the back of properties on Rooks Close and Westfield Lane.
The huge storage pipe is capable of holding 840,000 litres of storm water during periods of heavy rainfall - equivalent to the volume held within 10,500 baths.
Engineering specialists, Mott MacDonald Bentley, who are carrying out the project on the company's behalf, have also installed an additional 100 metres of connecting sewerage pipe.
This week, all reinstatement and electrical connection works are to be completed.
Dominic Cunney, Yorkshire Water's project manager, said the project demonstrated the firm’s commitment to playing a part in helping reduce the risk of sewer flooding in the region.
The work is part of Yorkshire Water's £120 million investment to upgrade its sewer network and treatment facilities in order to further reduce the risk of sewer flooding which can occur when sewers become overloaded during times of heavy rainfall.
