Nomenca set to start £5m phosphorus removal work

Nomenca is set to start a £4.9 million package of work with United Utilities as part of the water company’s AMP5 Phosphorus Removal Programme.

The programme, across five sites in Cheshire and two in East Manchester, requires ferric and alkalinity dosing package plants, solids removal and modifications to interface with existing site systems.

Nomenca developed the solution with United Utilities as they deployed early contractor involvement, allowing Nomenca to enter into a design services agreement. Working as an integrated team with UU Engineering staff utilising 3D modelling has enabled the development of a standard asset solution.

Production is currently underway at Nomenca’s Chemical Dosing centre of excellence in Warrington. The off-site construction approach has seen construction man hours reduced by 26,000 while the overall programme was reduced by 24 months compared to a conventional approach.

The programme CAPEX has reportedly been reduced by 28 per cent while the OPEX has been cut by 20 per cent through reduced chemical and energy requirements. The carbon footprint has been reduced by around 500 tonnes compared to a conventional approach, Nomenca said.

Ian Cooper, Nomenca’s Chemical Dosing Manage, said:

“This modular plant has the flexibility to take into consideration fluctuations in throughput.  During the first phase of the works our 3D modelling techniques enabled our design team to gain buy-in from our client at all levels of engineering; including operations.

“When the design was finalised we successfully trialled the plant at various sites to produce a bespoke plant while still maintaining our production line manufacturing methods.  The pre-tested product is then delivered to site to ‘plug and play’.  The savings speak for themselves.”
