Northumbrian Water starts £2m water supply upgrade in Sunderland

Northumbrian Water is investing £2 million on a major upgrade to improve the water supply network in the Penshaw area of Sunderland.

The North East’s biggest water supplier started work this on replacing more than 18km of cast iron water mains with HPPE plastic water mains The scheme also involves renewing service pipes and replacing external stop taps with meter boxes.

The work, which is being carried out by contractor Fastflow Pipeline Services, is expected to take just over one year to complete.

Brian Hardy, Northumbrian Water’s project manager for the Penshaw scheme, said the work was essential to maintain and improve the future water supply for thousands of people in the Penshaw area.

By the end of AMP5 in 2015 the utility will have spent £150 million to maintain and upgrade water supply networks across the region.
