South East Water’s programme to install domestic water meters will be rolled out to Farnham from Spring 2014 when more than 11,000 meters will be fitted for customers in the town and surrounding villages that do not already have one.
Charles Healey, Metering Manager at South East Water, said:
“Installing meters is a key part of our plan to manage future demand for water. Research has found that customers on a water meter use 10 per cent less water than those who are unmetered as it encourages people to think about their water use and behaviour.”
Currently 62% of South East Water customers already have a water meter, with the vast majority of those having opted to switch to meters and pay for what water they use.
Lee Dance, Head of Water Resources and Environmental at South East Water, said:
“Customers that receive a meter as part of the metering programme will be given a hippo bag for their toilet cistern, which can reduce the volume of water used for flushing, and a four minute shower timer to help them become water efficient in the home.”
The programme to install water meters began in Basingstoke during Summer 2011 and has been progressing on a street by street basis since then. The Company will install 375,000 water meters across its supply area so that at least 90 per cent of customers will have a meter by 2019.
