Liverpool Wastewater Treatment Works nears completion

Work on United Utilities Liverpool wastewater treatment works (WWTW), an upgrade project being delivered by GCA JV (Galliford Try Costain Atkins Joint Venture), is nearing completion.

When fully up and running by 2016, the new sequencing batch reactor (SBR) plant will be capable of treating 4750 litres per second of wastewater, which is treatment of a population equivalent of more than one million people from Liverpool.

“Work on this highly complex project is progressing well and going to programme” said Andy Fielding, GCA JV Innovation Champion for the Liverpool Project.

Construction of the 21m-high concrete SBR process tank is almost complete, as is construction of the SBR feed pumping station, its blower building and the new sludge treatment building. The mechanical and electrical (M&E) installation is now well advanced and is on target to start commissioning the new sludge treatment facility in September.

The installation of the gallery pipework is also nearing completion and water testing of the structures has now started. In addition, the huge outfall pipe previously lowered onto the bed of the River Mersey is now operational sending the highly treated effluent almost 280m out into the Mersey estuary. This will then be naturally dispersed by the tide, helping to improve bird habitats along the coastline.

Commissioning of the WWTW SBR is due to start at the end of this year and will continue into 2015.
