Severn Trent Water tests two new wind turbines

Severn Trent Water expects to start testing its two wind turbines in Derby over the coming weeks.

The water company is working very closely with East Midlands Airport to test the turbines – known as Winnie and Tony – which will this week be working in ‘idle mode’ and turning very slowly.

The airport has given Severn Trent a window of opportunity to test the turbines safely. During the rest of summer and into autumn, the utility expects to continue testing the wind turbines for short periods of time as part of the development of an innovative new radar system, which will benefit the UK aviation and renewable energy industry.

Severn Trent Water already has two wind turbines near Leicester and Nottingham which are working and producing renewable energy. When the Derby turbines come on stream, collectively all four of turbines are due generate around 20,000 megawatt hours of electricity annually - equivalent to supplying 6,000 homes with power.
