Costain pilots new Behavioural Safety Course for staff and supply chain

Costain is piloting a new Behavioural Safety training course aimed at teaching personnel on its projects how to deliver its Behavioural Management programme.

The Company recently held its first ‘Train the Trainer’ course at the Heysham Link Road and Crossrail’s C610 Projects, where delegates attended a two-day course covering all aspects of Behavioural Safety.

The Group employs its own Behavioural Management programme, called Costain Behavioural Safety (CBS), on all of its projects. CBS is used to create an environment where, through exhibiting leadership, everyone in the Company - from the site to the office - understands the importance of taking responsibility for their own safety and those around them.

CBS forms an integral part of the Group’s overall safety, health, and environment programme through Costain Cares, which aims to address the growing needs of its stakeholders, including its employees, through greater corporate responsibility.

The new course will help Costain extend the reach of Behavioural Safety to the people who work on its projects, including the supply chain. Delegates who complete the training also gain the additional benefit of strengthening their skills in delivering effective briefings, presentations, training and communication.

“Our CBS programme initially focused on the behaviours of our Directors and senior leaders within the business, as it’s their behaviour that creates the environment which determines the success and performance of the business. However, we are now communicating the benefits of CBS to the people on the ground so that site operatives can apply the benefits of CBS to their fellow workers to improve health and safety on-site and drive performance for our customers,” said Alan Cheung, Costain’s CBS Director for Behavioural Management.
