United Utilities tenders £15m sludge transport services contract

United Utilities has gone out to tender with a contract for sludge transport services worth up to £15 million.

The water company is looking to appoint up to six suppliers to the framework agreement which will run for five years, with a further three years of extension options.

Estimated overall value of the contract, which is divided into two separate Lots, is put at between £10 million to £15 million.

United Utilities produces around 450,000 tonnes of sludge per annum through its Wastewater Treatment Works across the region - 300,000 tonnes of this is recycled to agricultural land and 150,000 tonnes is burnt through the Company’s incinerator based at Shell Green.

Lot 1, which covers Scheduled Services for a number of the company's sites, is worth up to £14 million. Lot 2, which covers the provision of Reactive Services at the company's Shell Green site in the event of an incident, is worth up to £1.5 million.

United Utilities requires a comprehensive service for the loading, transportation, unloading, stockpiling and stockpile management for its treated sludge - biosolids- to agricultural land.

Scope of the agreement includes:

  • daily liaison with the firm's recycling controllers
  • loading and collection of biosolids from Wastewater sites
  • ability to manage the full volume of sludge produced at each site awarded
  •  transportation to end destination
  • stockpiling of biosolids
  • daily use of the firm's Recycling Management Database

Successful suppliers will also be expected to share new potential customer contacts with United Utilities' agricultural advisors to support the company in gaining a stable land bank.

Time limit for receipt of tenders or requests to participate is 25th April - click here to download the tender documentation.
