Anglian Water has launched its market engagement activityfor the Main Works Contracts for the construction of its £5 billion Lincolnshire & Fens Reservoir Programme.
The water company is looking to engage the market and potential contractors interested in its upcoming procurement for Main Works Contractors (MWC) to deliver the multi-billionpound Fens (FR) and Lincolnshire (LR) Reservoir programme.
The MWCs will be responsible for the detailed design and construction of the assets within the project. The MWCs will also require extensive involvement and expertise of Tier 2 / 3 supply chain specialists. This includes all the necessary groundworks, building, Water Treatment Plant, MEICA and associated activities.
Anglian Water is interested in engaging with both MWC and supply chain specialists and suppliers as it continues to develop its delivery, commercial and procurement thinking for the reservoir schemes.
The proposed Lincolnshire Reservoir scheme location is 30 miles south of Lincoln, within the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire. At its greatest dimensions it is expected be approximately 2.6km wide and 3.2km long to the embankment toe. The construction stage will commence between 2029-2031 – Anglian Water’s latest Water Resource Management Plan notes an earliest in-service date of 2039.
The reservoir consists of multiple assets, including:
- 55 Mm3 reservoir with 50Mm3 usable volume
- Raw water feed from three sources - the South Forty Foot Drain, the River Witham and the River Trent (also via the SFFD)
- New upstream infrastructure - likely to consist of open channel and pipeline transfers, as well as inter-catchment treatment works
- New downstream infrastructure assets will include potable treatment works, potable transfer and break pressure tanks. It is expected that c.55km of downstream transfers will be required.
The proposed Fens Reservoir scheme is 30 miles north of Cambridge and is within the Fenland district of Cambridgeshire. At its greatest dimensions it is expected be approximately 2.6km wide and 2.4km long to the embankment toe. The construction stage will commence between 2029-2031 - Anglian Water’s latest Water Resource Management Plan notes an earliest in-service date of 2036.
The reservoir consists of multiple assets, including:
- 55 Mm3 reservoir with 50 Mm3 useable volume
- Raw water feed from three sources - Middle Level System, the Ouse Washes (River Delph)/River Great Ouse, and the River Nene and its counterdrain, acting as a tertiary source
- New upstream infrastructure - likely to consist of open channel transfers and may require inter-catchment treatment works
- New downstream infrastructure assets will include potable treatment works, potable transfer and break pressure tanks. It is expected that c.65km of downstream transfers will be required.
Anglkian Water is inviting interested companies to register their interest in the projects and respond to a short questionnaire via a dedicated website link.
Estimated total value of the upcoming contract is £5 billion - the packaging strategy for the proposed MWC's is not yet finalised. The water company is currently considering the following four Lots:
- Lot 1 Reservoir Construction
- Lot 2 Treated Water Transfers
- Lot 3 Water Treatment Works (incl. INNS works)
- Lot 4 Raw water Transfers
Anglian Water says a range of options have been considered to date and would now like to discuss the packaging options with the market as part of the next phase of market sounding and engagement, with the aim of progressing with an optimal packaging approach, as it seeks to finalise delivery, commercial and procurement strategies.
Currently the estimated date of for the publication of a formal contract notice is January 2027.
