Southern Water launches preliminary market engagement for Littlehampton & Medway Water Recycling Plants

Southern Water has launched its preliminary market engagement for two strategic water recycling schemes; the water company is progressing its plans for the Littlehampton and Medway Water Recycling Plants which would enable it to deliver up to 33.4 million litres per day of purified recycled water during drought conditions.

The schemes will reduce abstraction from sensitive river systems, support environmental destinations, and ensure resilient water supplies for future generations.

The projects respond to Environment Agency directives to reduce abstraction and to regional forecasts of supply deficits under Water Resource South East (WRSE) and Water Resource Management Plan 2024 (WRMP24) planning scenarios. Both schemes are essential to meeting Southern Water's obligations under the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) and are expected to contribute to achieving environmental destination outcomes in sensitive catchments.

Current estimated start and end contract dates are 31 January 2028 to 31 January 2048.

Southern Water has issued a Request For Information and is now invtiing interested suppliers to participate in a market testing exercise. The water company is making clear that the RFI does not formally begin the procurement nor constitute any commitment to undertake any procurement exercise nor form a commercial strategy in a particular form. Any follow-up discussions will be solely for information and planning purposes only.

Interested suppliers are asked to register with Southern Water’s sourcing portal (if not already registered) to access the RFI and to complete a market questionnaire.

The RFI  runs from Thursday 18th December to Thursday 15th January - the period may be extended if the utility feels it beneficial to do so. Southern may also undertake more targeted engagement with interested suppliers by interview and run subsequent market engagement.

The water company says the answers suppliers provide will be invaluable to informing Southern Water's understanding of the market and provide insight as to how it can best deliver value for money to customers.
