Grontmij has been appointed by the Polish National Water Management Authority (NWMA) to prepare comprehensive, flood risk management plans as part of a consortium consisting of the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, DHI Group and Arcadis.
The project is worth € 2.2M for Grontmij.
River flooding is the most destructive natural hazard in the Baltic Sea Basin and is a particular problem in Poland, with flood risk management and flood resilience becoming major priorities following the dramatic floods in Poland in 1997 and 2010, where dozens of people were killed.
The NWMA now intends to reduce the potential negative impact on human life and health, the environment, economic activity and on the nation’s cultural heritage.
The consortium, which Grontmij forms part of, is tasked with developing extensive flood risk management plans over the subsequent years which the NWMA will use to improve the flood protection level. The flood risk plans will cover the whole of Poland and at least 15,000km of the country’s rivers.
Grontmij will help to identify flood risk management goals and flood hazards and will conduct risk assessments to create the ultimate flood management plans for the river basins.
