NAO looks at meeting water demand

A recent National Audit Office (NAO) report gives a balanced summary of issues facing water companies and regulators on supply and demand for water in England and Wales.
Ministers have banned damaging types of fishing in 60 square nautical miles of sea off the South West coast to protect threatened sea life
Environment Secretary, David Miliband, today welcomed the carbon-cutting measures in the Chancellor’s Budget as the next steps towards a low-carbon economy.
Water UK, the body that represents all UK water and wastewater service suppliers at national and European level, has welcomed what it sees as a significant step by Defra towards solving what it describes as “the age-old problem of agricultural diffuse water pollution” at source where it is most cost-effective.

Legal protection for rare pool frog

Defra has announced legal protection for a rare frog with a distinctive accent. 
Water companies in England and Wales reduced the amount of water lost to leakage by nearly 160 million litres of water (Ml/d) a day. This is equal to the daily needs of around one million domestic consumers.

Latest river basin planning consultation

The Environment Agency has launched its second round of river basin planning consultations
Investment in flood defences should rise substantially to keep up with climate change is the message that the Environment Agency Board will hear and discuss when they meet in Bristol today.
Water UK, the organisation which represents all UK water and wastewater service suppliers at national and European level, has said that required changes to abstraction licences could have a serious effect on planning for the public water supply.
New regulations that come into force today will strengthen the protection for consumers who suffer sewer flooding. The regulations have been introduced by the Government and follow Ofwat's recommendations of how GSS should be improved for customers.
