Major industry leaders today joined Commercial Secretary, Lord Deighton and Business and Energy Minister, Michael Fallon in signing a joint initiative to reduce carbon in infrastructure which could save as much as 24 million tonnes of carbon and £1.46 billion a year by 2050.

 

Finance and how to address loss and damage from the impacts of climate change in vulnerable developing countries look set to dominate the UN Climate Summit which starts today, according to global professional services consultancy PwC.

 

The Crown Estate has announced that it will work with the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult on programmes aimed at increasing the momentum of driving down costs of offshore wind, wave and tidal energy.

Arctic sea ice remains in long-term decline

Official figures from the National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado released yesterday have confirmed that the Arctic Sea Ice has reached its summer minimum and is again one of the lowest levels on record, falling to 5.10 million square kilometers (1.97 million square miles) on September 13, 2013.

 

A new report by RenewableUK, the trade body for the UK wind and marine renewables sector, has highlighted a 74% increase in UK jobs in wind and marine energy since 2010 - together these growth industries now directly employ 18,465 people full time.

 

Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Edward Davey, has today made the Government’s case for the safe and responsible exploration of shale gas in the UK, in line with the UK’s climate change targets.

Go-ahead for £100m Welsh pumped storage scheme

Yesterday’s decision to approve plans for a 600MWh electricity pumped storage facility in disused slate quarries near Llanberis in north Wales has been hailed by the scheme’s developer as a key step in enabling Britain’s low carbon energy strategy.

 

Global engineering giant Alstom is planning to design and construct the generators for the £650 million proposed Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon project – the group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tidal Lagoon Power Limited, the company behind the scheme.

 

The Green Investment Bank (GIB) has revealed that it has committed funds to 11 transactions with a total value of £2.3 billion and direct investment of £635 million, in the first five months of being operational.

£30m Scottish hydro scheme approved

SSE will begin construction on the £30 million 7.5MW Glasa hydro scheme near Ardross in Ross-shire later this year, it has confirmed.
