Environment Agency sets out plans for £3m Badsey flood risk scheme

The Environment Agency has set out its plans and details of progress to date on the proposed £3 million Badsey flood risk management scheme.

The Badsey Brook catchment runs from the Cotswold hills through Broadway, Childswickham, Murcot, Wickhamford, Badsey and Aldington to the River Avon.

The Badsey Brook flood risk management scheme will reduce flood risk for approximately 290 properties along the Badsey and Bunches Brook in Broadway, Childswickham and Murcot. The area suffered from extensive flooding in 2007 and 2012 with roads and properties affected. Following the 2007 floods, the Environment Agency began drawing up plans to protect the Badsey Brook catchment from flooding.

Proposed solution and timescales

At the beginning of 2015 consultants completed the detailed scheme design. The proposed scheme will include the construction of a flood storage area upstream of Cheltenham Road in Broadway, earth embankments and a control structure to limit the amount of water flowing down the brook during periods of high rainfall.

A planning application for the works was submitted to Wychavon District Council in February 2015. During the next few months the Environment Agency plan to carry out some archaeological investigations on site as part of the planning process.

Subject to planning application approval, the necessary consents and funding, construction is planned to start in 2016.

The Environment Agency has been liaising with landowners affected by the proposed scheme and discussing the potential impacts.

The English Severn and Wye Regional Flood and Coastal Committee (RFCC) have contributed funding towards the Badsey Brook flood scheme. At the January 2015 RFCC meeting future funding was confirmed which has allowed the purchase of land for the proposed flood storage area.

The scheme is estimated to cost approximately £3 million in total - so far £1.5 million in Grant-in-Aid funding has been conditionally secured towards the construction of the scheme. However, continuation of the project is dependent on securing local contributions.
