The Environment Agency has provided an update on how plans to build a £3 million flood defence scheme in Rugeley, Staffordshire are progressing.
The Agency is working with partners to reduce the risk of flooding from Rising Brook in Rugeley, and a flood defence scheme that will help to reduce the risk of flooding to more than 114 residential properties and 159 commercial properties. The flood defence scheme also forms an integral part of the local council’s plans to regenerate parts of the town centre.
In partnership with Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership, Staffordshire County Council and Cannock Chase District Council, the Environment Agency is building a £3 million flood defence scheme.
The scheme includes constructing an embankment on playing fields that can store water during heavy rainfall. It also includes improving the playing fields and repairing the collapsing footbridge which forms part of Cannock Chase Heritage Trail.
The scheme will allow for the redevelopment of sites that are identified in Cannock Chase Local Plan.
The Environment Agency received planning approval in June 2016 and contractors are due to start construction in December 2016. The construction phase will last until March 2017. The playing fields will then be reinstated between April and autumn 2017, when they will reopen to the public.
