Environment Agency warns of ongoing flood risk in wake of Storm Chandra

The Environment Agency is calling on the public to remain vigilant to the risk of significant flooding in the wake of Storm Chandra.

Current forecasts show conditions are expected to remain unsettled, with further impacts expected across the country. A Met Office yellow rain warning will be in place for parts of South West England today.

Additional pumps have been brought online by Environment Agency teams in locations across the Somerset Levels and Moors and continue to run, reducing the impacts of flooding and helping to stabilise water levels.

Water levels also remain very high in Dorset and Wiltshire and the Environment Agency continues to work with the council, water company and emergency responders in response to flooding.

The Agency said its teams have been mobilised across the country to check on other flood defences, clear any river blockages and closely monitor river levels. They have been working around the clock to reduce the risk of flooding, and will continue to be out in force over the coming days.

The EA estimate that 285 properties have been recorded as flooded and approximately 16,200 have been protected by defences. The numbers are subject to change as teams continue to verify the impacts on the ground.

Joe Cuthbertson, Flood Duty Manager at the Environment Agency, said:

“Significant ongoing groundwater flooding impacts remain probable in parts of Dorset and Wiltshire from today, with minor impacts possible for parts of Hampshire for the next five days.”

Further minor coastal flooding impacts are probable along parts of the South West and the North East coasts of England today.

The Agency has repeated its warning urging people not to drive though flood water, saying it is often deeper than it looks and just 30cm of flowing water is enough to float a car.

Multiple flood warnings and flood alerts are currently in place across parts of England. Ongoing groundwater flooding is probable in parts of the South of England, along with river flooding possible but not expected on the Somerset Levels, throughout the next five days. Further local flooding is probable from surface water and possible from rivers across parts of the southwest of England today, with inland flooding possible more widely across England through Friday and Saturday.

As rainfall levels start to ease, some rivers, moors and levels will respond slowly to previous rainfall and therefore may continue to rise.
