Ofwat publishes key data on water companies’ AMP5 costs and performance

Water industry regulator Ofwat has published detailed year by year information provided by the water companies on their operational expenditure and performance during AMP5.

The information was supplied by the water and sewerage and water only companies in England and Wales in August 2013 to help the regulator prepare for the 2014 price review.

The water and sewerage companies completed 1 to 7 of the following tables, while the water only companies completed tables 1, 2 and 7 on their cost and activity information.:

  1. Water service by expenditure
  2. Explanatory variables and volume measures for the water service
  3. wastewater service expenditure by purpose
  4. Explanatory variables and volume measures for the wastewater service
  5. information relating to transferred private sewers
  6. Large works
  7. Defined benefit pensions

All of the companies also provided information on their customer service performance.

Following Ofwat’s quality assurance process this is the final data used to inform the regulator’s cost assessment models for all companies’ for the 2014 price review.

The tables, which cover each company individually, contain a mass of information on the water companies’ operational activities, with data provided on a yearly basis for a number of areas. To mention just a few, the tables include spend on:

  • maintaining serviceability of non-infrastructure assets
  • new developments
  • investment to address raw water deterioration (THM, nitrates, Crypto, pesticides etc)
  • resilience
  • SEMD
  • new mains
  • mains renewal
  • sludge treatment and disposal
  • reduced flooding risk for properties
  • storage schemes to reduce spill frequencies at CSOs
  • National Environmental Programme

The tables also include spend on a company-specific basis – for example, data by a year-by-year spend for Thames Water on the Thames Tideway tunnel, the Lee Tunnel and Shaft G of the proposed Thames Tideway Tunnel.
