Innovate UK, the Government’s innovation agency, has launched a new funding competition inviting companies to apply for £2 million of funding to address potential security problems and challenges related to the ‘Internet of Things’.
The aim of this competition is to identify new ways of meeting the challenges which could arise from the Internet of Things - a network of sensors that communicate with their environment.
Recent months have seen growing levels of discussion surrounding the advent of Smart Cities networks and their vulnerability to security issues, including the use of sensors and related technologies by critical infrastructure operators in the water, power and transport sectors.
Up to £1 million is available for phase 1 of this competition. Successful organisations will receive between £60,000 and £90,000 for projects lasting around 3 months. A further £1 million will be available for phase 2.
Announcing the competition, Innovate UK said we live in a ‘sensor-rich' environment - the sensors connect in ad-hoc, local and mesh networks, operate using different protocols and standards, and use encryption to protect communications.
Issues the competition is seeking to address include:
- how can we pull together and visualise data on subjects of interest from a diverse, sensor-rich, loosely connected environment that operates across different protocols and across standards?
- how can we show how sure we are of a hypothesis that 2 events/users/devices are connected, based on the data gathered?
Proposals should show how applicants can:
- pull together data from a diverse environment operating across different protocols and standards
- show how 2 events/users/devices connect, based on the data gathered
The Centre for Defence Enterprise is funding the competition on behalf of UK intelligence agencies, including the Security Service (MI5), Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) (MI6). All proposals must be submitted via the CDE portal.
Deadline for applications is 5pm on 29 October 2015 - a webinar about the competition will be held on Thursday this week.
